Materials and technical specifications

Working with CRGO and CRNO electrical steel, we support transformer manufacturers with a range of thicknesses, grades and customized component requirements.

Specification

MaterialFull nameThicknessGrades
CRGOCold-Rolled Grain-Oriented electrical steel0.20 mm to 0.35 mm70 to 120 grade, depending on material specification and availability
CRNOCold-Rolled Non-Grain-Oriented electrical steel0.35 mm and 0.50 mm230 to 360 grade in 0.35 mm; 350 to 1000 grade in 0.50 mm

Grades depend on material specification and availability.

CRGO

  • Its grains run along the rolling direction, so flux flows best along the length of the strip. Core corners are mitred at 45° to keep the flux close to the grain at the joints.
  • Step-lap stacking staggers the joints in small steps, so the flux crosses them gradually. This lowers core loss and transformer noise.
  • Each sheet carries a thin insulating coating that limits eddy currents. Cutting burrs can bridge that coating, so clean edges matter.

CRNO

  • Its magnetic properties are the same in every direction, which suits the changing flux path in E&I cores. It is also the standard steel for electric motors for the same reason.
  • Many standard E&I sizes are scrapless: the I is punched from the window of the E, so very little steel is wasted.
  • Thinner sheet has lower eddy-current loss, so 0.35 mm loses less energy than 0.50 mm.
